Rental Discrimination: Your Rights and How to File a Complaint
The Law
The Anti-Discrimination in Products, Services and Public Entertainment Law (2000) prohibits rental discrimination on grounds of race, national origin, community, gender, sexual orientation, religion and more.
Section 5 makes advertising "not suitable for Ethiopians" a criminal offence.
What To Do When Refused
- Document everything: Save ads, WhatsApp messages, emails; note time, date, exact words said.
- Test: Ask a non-Ethiopian friend to enquire about the same apartment — success = evidence of discrimination.
- Report: Tebeka (free legal): 072-2424622 | ACRI: 03-5608185 | Police: 100
Compensation
A successful claim can yield up to 120,000 ILS without proving actual damage.
